The competition brief called for the revitalization of the abandoned Ajdovščina subterranean commercial zone with a new cinema and accompanying program. The main task of the competition was the placement of new movie theaters in existing commercial premises of the subterranean passage and the development of a new entry pavilion level with the urban space of downtown Ljubljana.
The strict square pavilion brings a new sense of order into a previously undefined area. The pavilion is divided into four quadrants that house distinct units of content. Yet its layout and structure are not grounded in unfounded formalism but in the requirements of program and space within the building and its relations towards facilities and ambients on all sides of the pavilion. The closed section of the pavilion is designed in an L-shape while the square roof creates a covered exterior plaza. The architectural design of the pavilion is defined by a composition of four architectural elements:
- floating roof panel,
- scissor staircase that pierces the floor of the urban space and the roof panel, thereby physically and visually connecting the pavilion, underground cinema and the city,
- closed service volume containing the load bearing spine of the pavilion,
- free standing kiosk placed on the city street under the roof of the pavilion softens the border between the cinema and urban space.
